The Mayor of Sekondi Takoradi, Hon. Abdul Mumin Issah has presented licensed motorbikes with helmets to all 54 elected Assembly Members of Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly.
Hon. Issah in his address at a brief handing over ceremony indicated that the bikes were made possible by the Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development for which he expressed his profound gratitude.
He added that the motorbikes are meant to equip the Assembly members with ease of commuting in order to execute their duties efficiently. He bemoaned the mobility challenges of most Assembly members in the discharge of their responsibilities as the peoples’ representatives.
He therefore cautioned the Assembly members to desist from selling their motorbikes and advised them to make good use of the bikes to serve their electorates. He further advised them to ensure regular maintenance of their bikes.
The mayor finally advised the Assembly members to be careful when riding the motorbikes on our roads. He noted that, statistics on the accident rate of motorbikes in the country are alarming and therefore entreated them to desist from over speeding and drinking alcohol for riding.
The Hon. Presiding Member of STMA, Hon. John Buckman who received the motorbikes on behalf of the Assembly Members thanked the government for coming to their aid and assisting them with their work.
Hon. Buckman assured that they will do their best to make sustainable use of the motorbikes received. He urged the mayor to convey to the president and the government, their gratitude for the gesture.
